His birth certificate says: Superintendent Registrar's District Cork, Registrar's District Whitechurch, Co Cork; #83; William Joseph Mostyn, male, born 21 November1886 at Riverstown, son of Patrick Mostyn, Sergeant R.I.C., of Riverstown and Ellen Mostyn formerly Blake, Informant Patrick Mostyn, Father, Riverstown; registered May 12th 1887; M. Colville Kennedy, Registrar. Registered on Statutory Declaration 12.5.87

1901 - He is listed in the1901 Irish Census taken on 8 Apr 1901 on Mormon film #812,392, 76|17c file 16, Co Cork, Parliamentary Division S.E. Cork, Constabulary District Queenstown, Sub-District Passage West, Poor Law Union Cork, District Electoral Division Monkstown, Townland Passage West, Street Victoria Terrace, Barony Kerricurrihy, Civil Parish Monkstown, p B-4 line 5 as: William J Mostyn, son, Roman Catholic, can read and write, age 14, male, clerk in shipbuilding yards, not married, born Co Cork, living in a 7-room single family house built of stone, brick or concrete, with a roof of slate, iron or tile, and 4 windows on the front of the house [a 2d of 4 classes of houses], with his father Patrick, mother Ellen, sister Margaret, sister Mary E, brother Henry J, brother Michael C, sister Aileen E, and sister Josephine G Mostyn.

1902 - At age 15, he began a shipwright apprenticeship at Queenstown DryDocks. As of 17 May 1907, he had served five years. He met his wife when he was a young boy living in the barracks in Passage because his father was a Sergeant. Later, he lived in a rooming house in Passage until his marriage. Good looking. 5'10" tall and thin. Fresh complexion, gray hair, blue eyes. Smoked a pipe. Good sense of humor.

1905 - He was godfather to his niece, Margaret Anne [sic] Tucker, baptized 20 Aug at St Mary's Church in Passage West.

1912 - He married Catherine Cotter on 14 Sep. After marriage, they lived on Main St, Passage West. His marriage certificate states in part: 1912 Marriage solemnized at the Roman Catholic Church of Passage West in the Registrar's District of Carrigaline #2, Co Cork, #96, married 14th Sep 1912 in the presence of Thomas Cotter [his brother-in-law] and Margaret Howard [his wife's cousin], registered 26 Jan 1914:

1920 - According to the book, "Maritime Gateway to Cork" by Colman O Mahoney, he was elected Town Commissioner of Passage West as a member of the Labour Party on 14 July. The first meeting of the new Town Commissioners was held at noon on 19 July 1920.

1921 - According to the book, "Maritime Gateway to Cork" by Colman O Mahoney, as a Passage West Town Commissioner, Willie seconded a motion proposed by Michael O Connell for the Town Commissioners to tender their sincere sympathy to Thomas O Mahoney, another Town Commissioner, and his wife, "in the sad loss they have sustained in the untimely death of their dear son Jack..." Jack O Mahoney had died as a result of wounds received in an action against the Black & Tans.

1926 - Immigration VISA #9762 issued at Cobh on 14 Jun. He left his pregnant wife and six children on Sat, 10 Jul 1926 to immigrate to the USA, arriving at the port of Boston on 19 Jul 1926 on the SS WestPhalia. He is recorded on the Ship's Passenger List at the US National Archives, film T-843, roll 312, v491, SS Westphalia, line 6 as: Mostyn, William joseph, age 39, male, married, shipwright, able to read and write English, Irish nationality, Irish race, last permanent residence Passage West, Ireland, nearest relative in the old country wife: Catherine Moystn [sic] Main St, Passage West, Co Cork, final destination Boston, Mass, had a ticket to his final destination, passage paid by himself, in possession of $25, never in the USA before, going to join his uncle, Michael Blake of 20 Calvin St, Somerville Boston, intended length of stay in the USA indefinite, intending to become a citizen of the USA, never in prison, not a polygamist, not an anarchist, not bound to contract labor, good mental and physical health, not crippled or deformed, 5'10", fresh complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, no identifying marks, born Riverstown, Ireland. When he landed, he weighed 136 lbs and had 56 £. He stayed with his maternal uncle, Michael Blake, at 20 Calvin St, Somerville, MA when he first arrived in the USA.
On 11 Sep, his daughter, Margaret Mary Claire, was born in Passage West. He worked at American Sugar Co [called Domino Sugar], Boston, MA.
He filed his Declaration of Intention to become a citizen of the USA on 7 Dec. It states in part: #190239, #24600, District of Mass, In the District Court of the US. I William Joseph Mostyn, aged 39 years, occupation carpenter, do declare on oath that my personal description is: color white, complexion fair, height 5'10", wieght 140 pounds, hair grey, eyes hazel, no other visible distinctive marks. I was born in Riverstown, Co Cork, Ireland on 21 Nov 1886; I now reside at 20 Calvin St, Somerville, Mass. I immigrated to the USA from Queenstown, Ireland on the vessel Westphalia; my last foreign residence was said Co Cork; I am married; the name of my wife is Catherine; she was born at Ireland and now resides at Co Cork, Ireland. It is my bona fide intention to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to . . . George V King of the United Kingdom of Gr Britain and Ireland and the British Dominions Beyond the Seas, Emperor of India of whom I am now a subject; I arrived at the port of Boston, Mass on or about the 19th day of July 1926 . . . [signed] William Joseph Mostyn on 7 Dec 1926 before the Deputy Clerk of the District Ct of the USA.

1927 - According to his petition for naturalizaion, he moved into Suffolk Co in June, so he must have moved out of his uncle's home in Somerville. According to his diary, on 7 Nov he weighed 176 lbs.

1928 - According to Winnie Tucker Lee, who was living in the Boston area during the time he was there, but before his wife joined him, she helped Lizzie Blake O'Connor find a place in S Boston for them to live when the rest of his family came over from Ireland. Lizzie had a heart condition, so Winnie and Lizzie would go to various apartments but Lizzie would wait downstairs while Winnie went upstairs to look over the apartments. Eventually they picked an apartment on Dorchester St, S Boston, and Lizzie's daughter, Anna O'Connor, got the apartment all set up, with furniture, curtains, even tea in the kitchen! When his wife and her children arrived in the US, their apartment was all ready - she only had to walk right in. He was forever grateful for all their help.
On 20 May, his wife and seven children arrived from Ireland at the port of Boston on the SS Scythia. From his diary, the May statistics were: rent $32; coal 50¢; wood 20¢, gas 25¢, meat $3.65. After Dorchester St, the family moved around the corner to 10 Ward St, South Boston for many years, and then 67 Vassal St, Quincy, MA.

1931 - He applied for final citizenship papers on 31 Aug. As part of the naturalization process, the US Dept of Labor, Bureau of Naturalization, issued a Certificate of Arrival #1-77019 on 21 Sep. It states in part: Port of entry: Boston, Mass, Name: William Joseph Mostyn, Date: July 19, 1926, Manner of arrival: SS. Westphalia. On 9 Nov, he filed his Petition for Citizenship at the US District Ct, Boston. It states in part: #137732, William Joseph Mostyn, residence 10 Ward St, S Boston, Suffolk, occupation stat. engineer, born Riverstown, Cork, Ireland on Nov 21, 1886, Irish race, decalred intnetion to become a citizen on Dec 7, 1926 in the US Dist Ct, Mass Dist at Boston. My wife is Catherine. We married on Sept 12, 1912 [sic] at Cork, Ireland, she was born at Cork, Ireland on 1887 and entered the USA at Boston on May 1928 for permanent residence and now lives with me. I have 8 children as follows; Mary G, Jul 12, 1913; Patrick S, Nov 13, 1914; Catherive T [sic] Nov 25, 1916; Eleanor [sic] T, Feb 16, 1920; William J F, April 12, 1922; Elizabeth P, June 29, 1924; Margaret C, Sep 11, 1926; all born in Cork, Ireland; Virginia T, Aug 17, 1929 born Boston, MA, all live in Boston, MA. My last foreign residence was Cork, Ireland. I emigrated to the USA from Queenstown, Ireland. My lawful entry for permanent residence in the USA was at Boston, Mass under the name of William J Mostyn on July 19, 1926 on the vessel Westphalia. I intend to renounce all allegiance to George V, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain and Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. I have resided continuously in the USA since July 19, 1926 and in the county of Suffolk since June 1927. I have not heretofore made petition for citizenship. [signed] William Joseph Mostyn. Affidavits of Witnesses. Benjamin Anthony [husband of his wife's first cousin, Ellen Steele], occupation trucking, of 655 Columbia Rd, Boston, Dor, and James O'Connor [husband of his aunt, Lizzie Blake], occupation sta. fireman, of 169 W Seventh ST, S Boston, swear they have known said Mostyn since August 1926 . . . and that he resided at Boston in Suffolk Co continuously since June 1927, etc. [signed] Benjamin Anthony and James O'Connor. Subscribed and sworn to before me be the above-named petitioner and witnesses in the office of the Clerk of said Court at Boston on 9th Nov 1931, and certificate of arrival #1-77019 together with declaration of intention #190239 have been filed and attached.

1932 - On 29 Feb, he was sworn in as a citizen of the USA. His oath of allegiance states in part: I hereby declare on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to . . . George V by the Grace of God of Great Britain & Ireland & the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith. Emperor of India . . . that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the USA . . . SO HELP ME GOD. [signed] William Joseph Mostyn in open court on 29th Feb 1932, Certificate of Citizenship #3545575 issued.

1936 - Passport B287 issued 26 May. Permit #1097862, application #1096364 issued Wash DC 4 Jun1936.

1943 - He went to school for stationary engineering, and obtained a THIRD CLASS ENGINEER'S LICENSE, #484, on 18 Dec from the Commonwealth of MA, Department of Public Safety, Division of Inspection. It states that William Joseph Mostyn of Boston has been duly examined, and, being found competent and trustworthy, this THIRD CLASS ENGINEER'S LICENSE is granted to him in accordance with the laws of the commonwealth to have charge of and operate a boiler or boilers, not exceeding in the aggregate one hundred and fifty horse power, and an engine, or engines, not exceeding fifty horse power each, or to operate a second class plant under the engineer in direct charge of the plant. 1945 - According to his diary, he hurt his back 5 May at 3 pm.

1976 - He died at 2:15 pm on Sep 14. His death certificate states in part:
Place of death, Norfolk Co, Quincy, Quincy City Hospital, #867, William J Mostyn of 67 Vassal St, Quincy, MA. Not a US war veteran. Died Sep 14, 1976. Doctor Eugene M Tyrrell, MD, of 12 Dimmock St, Quincy, last saw him alive on Sep 14, 1976, 1976, and death occurred at 2:15 pm, caused by congestive heart failure and uremia for 3 days,. He also had prostate cancer. No autopsy. Lab and biopsy test confirmed the diagnosis. Buried Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, MA on 17 Sep, 1976. Funeral director Edward J Keohane of 785 Hancock St, Quincy, MA. Informant Mrs. Catherine Mostyn of 67 Vassal St, Quincy, MA. He was male, white, married, husband of Catherine Cotter, age 89, a stationary engineer at American Sugar Co, Boston, SSA#010-10-8882 A, born Ireland, father Patrick Mostyn born Ireland, mother Ellen Blake born Ireland. His gravestone on the front says "MOSTYN" and on the back says:

MOSTYN-William J of Quincy, formerly of South Boston and Cork, Ireland, September 14, 1976, the beloved husband of Catherine (Cotter) of 67 Vassal St, and father of Maureen G. Borhek of East Sandwich, Patrick S. of Braintree, Ivy Desmond of Quincy, Ellen Govatsos of Canton, Attorney William J. of Abington, Elizabeth Davies, Claire Contos and Virginia O'Donnell of Quincy, also survived by 23 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral from the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St, WOLLASTON, Friday morning. Funeral Mass in St. Ann's Church at a time to be announced. Visiting hours Thursday 2 -4 and 7-9. Interment Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catholic Bishops Relief Fund, 350 Fifth Ave, N.Y., N.Y. Late member of St. Monica's Holy Name Society and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Ireland.
