Web Notes notes for Ellen BLAKE
1863 - She was born on 23 May on Mill St, Ennis, Co Clare, Ireland, before Ireland instituted registration of births, so it is not possible to obtain a birth certificate. According to the Co Clare Heritage Center, her godparents were William Coffey and Bridget Lynch. The Coffeys lived very close by on Mill St.

1880 - She married Patrick Mostyn, member of the Royal Irish Constabulary [RIC] [police] on 27 Jan. The marriage certificate says: 1880 Marriage Solemnized at the Catholic Chapel of Ennistymon, Registrar's District of Ennistymon, Superintendent Registrar's District of Ennistymon, County Clare. No. 80; Married January 27th 1880 according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Catholic Church by me, Redmond Newell. This Marriage was Solemnized between us, Patrick Mostyn, Ellen Blake in the Presence of us, Owen Carney and Elisa McCarthy. Registered by me this 9th day of February 1880 T. F. Beew, Registrar. 1880 - On 15 July, the RIC transferred her husband to Cork, East Riding. On 28 Dec, her son, John [Jack] was born in Co Clare. He was baptized on 29 Dec. According to the Co Clare Heritage Center, Jack's Godparents were William Blake and Mary Blake, probably Ellen's sister and brother. Not sure whether Ellen stayed behind in Co Clare when her husband first went to Cork, while he looked around for a place for them to live, or if she went back to visit her parents and had her son then. Perhaps it ties in with the next story. When first married, Ellen didn't know how to handle the money, so she spent more than her husband made. He had to take a second job whitewashing to pay the extra bills. She was "mortified" so she took her son, Jack, and left her husband. She went home to Ennistymon to her parents and lived there over a year, till her parents told her to go back to her husband. This perhaps happened before the birth of her first child, and that is why he was born in Co Clare.

1899 - Her mother and her sister, Nana, immigrated to the USA. They left Ireland from Queenstown on 13 Oct. On the Ship's Passenger list for the SS New England, they reported Passage rather than Ennistymon as their last residence. This means they must have spent some time with Ellen who was living in Passage before leaving Ireland.

1901 - She is listed in the1901 Irish Census taken on 8 Apr 1901 on LDS film #812,392, 76|17c file 16, Co Cork, Parliamentary Division S.E. Cork, Constabulary District Queenstown, Sub-District Passage West, Poor Law Union Cork, District Electoral Division Monkstown, Townland Passage West, Street Victoria Terrace, Barony Kerricurrihy, Civil Parish Monkstown, p B-4 line 2 as Ellen Mostyn, wife, Roman Catholic, can read and write, age 39, female, no occupation, married, born Co Clare, living in a 7-room single family house built of stone, brick or concrete, with a roof of slate, iron or tile, and 4 windows on the front of the house [a 2d of 4 classes of houses], living with her husband, Patrick, daughter, Margaret, daughter Mary E, son William J, son Henry J, son Michael C, daughter Aileen E, and daughter Josephine G Mostyn.

1912 - Her mother died on 27 Dec in Lowell, MA, USA. Ellen is mentioned in the Lowell Sun, 30 Dec 1912 p12 col 2 and in the Lowell Courier-Citizen 30 Dec 1912 p12 col 3 as "Mrs. Mostyn of Ireland," a survivor of her mother.

1932 - Her sister, Nana Blake Chaloux, died on 10 Nov. Ellen is named in the 2 Dec 1932 petition of Nana's husband to become administrator of Nana's estate as "Mary [sic] Mostyn of Ireland, Sister", one of the heirs-at-law and next of kin.

She was tall and heavy set. She was a strict disciplinarian. She had 14 children, but only 10 lived long enough to be named. She liked to visit her family; she would come down from Cork City on the train to visit her children in Passage West. She would sneak food, cigars, etc. to prisoners in jail. She was a staunch Catholic.

1938 - She died on 24 May. Her death certificate says: Deaths Registered in the District of No 2 Rural in the Superintendent Registrar's District of Cork in the County of Cork No. 329; Date & Place of Death-1938 May 24th, Glenville Wilton Rd Cork Rd; Name-Ellen Mostyn; Sex-F; Condition-Widow; Age Last Birthday-67 [this is wrong, she must have been about 75]; Rank, Occupation or Profession- Housekeeper; Certified Cause of Death & Duration of Illness-Myocarditis, 2 months, Cardiac Failure; Signature, Qualification & Residence of Informant-Daisy Hay, present at death, Glenville, Wilton Rd; When Registered-May 26th 1938, J.
