He was a mechanical/marine engineer on the Cork Harbor ships and was on one of the ships that picked up Lusitania survivors. Previously he was a foreman fitter in the Victoria Dockyards in Passage West. Brilliant man. No formal education beyond elementary school. A great reader and brilliant in math. He always wore a suit and a gold watch chain. In later years he was a monitor in the technical school. A ship was in Passage for engine repair, but no one could figure out the problem. While discussing it with his sons, he took a stick from the fire and drew on the floor a new design for the engine showing a flaw in the original design. This was put on paper and sent to London where the engine was redesigned. Noreen Cotter has a picture and a letter from the British shipbuilding company thanking him. Lived on Main St, Passage West, County Cork in 1928. He used to pace all the time in his kitchen. He loved perfume. Whenever he got a haircut he put whiskey in back of his ears so he wouldn't catch cold. Maureen Mostyn Borhek has a letter he wrote to her. She corresponded with him a lot, and sent him money to buy tobacco.

RIP
COTTER

A quiet man, but you always knew who had the authority. Never spoke a cross word. He always knew exactly when anyone came in or went out. The house was very open, people could come in and out. Happy atmosphere. Lots of singing. Rita used to play the piano.

About 84 when he died.

His grand niece, Kattie Aherne Daly, lived with him from 1 year 5 months old until 14. He was like a father to her.

He was lovely, kind gentle man. Loving. quiet. Clever with his hands. reading a lot. Walking a lot. invented a pump He sold the pump to the farmer.

He was working in the dockyard in Passage, as a delegate for the union. One day there was a dispute, and he was in the office for two hours, all the lads in the shop wanted to know what happened, and they went to him right away. He looked out the window and said, "I think we're going to have a drop of rain"! He wouldn't tell them!

During the war they were in a bad way for fuel, and he made a bellows to blow the fire up. He designed a new kind. Worked by hand continual blow of air turning the handle round.

He also made a model steam engine, piston rods and tiny piston, he worked up in the technical college in Passage after he retired for fun.

He had a big prayer book, well used. He turned Republican in his last days and his family thought he got queer.

He was a quiet and intelligent man. Never talked about his family. He knew his grandson DickO was a bit wild when he was young, and was happy when he went to the technical school. He was a good friend to his grandson DickO. He was instrumental in him going to school, Crawford Polytechnical in cork.

He didn't show his feelings that much. He was well-respected in the town, and well liked. Called the Careful Man because he was slow in making decisions. He died suddenly from a heart attack. May Cotter was going up to Cork and he got out of bed to call her before she went, and she heard him, but he fell and died before she could get to the door to answer him. They had to push the door in. He didn't drink much, but he'd have the odd bottle of stout. He was very proud when his grandson Dicko at age 22 got the 2d engineer's license at a very young age.
