Web Notes notes for Margaret M GREGG
- [about] When was she born? Her obituary says she was 67 [would have been born about 1845] ; her death certificate says she was 63 [would have been born about 1849]. Her ship's passenger record says she was 58 in 1899 [would have been born about 1841]. Since she married in 1860, it is more likely she was born about 1841.

-My Aunts Ivy Mostyn Desmond and Maureen Mostyn Borhek think she is the daughter or granddaughter of Bishop John Gregg, who founded St Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork, Ireland. This Bishop Gregg was fairly famous, so I was able to obtain some information about him. He had 3 daughters, none of whom were Margaret. He had 3 sons, John, born 1831, Robert, born 1834, and William, born 1844. So Bishop John Gregg is not in the direct line. However, he was the fifth son of Richard Gregg, of Cappa, County Clare. Margaret Gregg is descended from one of these other sons of Richard Gregg, and therefore a niece of Bishop Gregg. If she was originally protestant, then she probably converted to Catholicism when she married a Catholic.

- According to the Co Clare Heritage Center, she married Michael Blake on 17 Nov. The witnesses were Andy Vaughan and Bridget Arkins. Relatives or friends?

- According to the Co Clare Heritage Center, her daughter, Mary, born on Mill St, Ennis, Co Clare, was baptized on 31 Mar. Godparents were James Morrissy and Bridget O'Loughlin.

- According to the Co Clare Heritage Center, her daughter, Ellen, was born on 23 May at Mill St, Ennis, Co Clare. Godparents were William Coffey and Bridget Lynch.

- According to the Co Clare Heritage Center, her son, William, was born on 8 Feb on Mill St, Ennis, Co Clare. Godparents were William Adams and Ellen O'Connor.

- According to the Co Clare Heritage Center, her daughter, Elizabeth [Lizzie], was born on 12 Feb on Mill St, Ennis, Co Clare. Godparents were John and Mary Hallinan.

Sometime after Lizzie's birth, the family moved to Deerpark, Ennistymon, Co Clare.

- Her son, John Blake, was born on 13 Dec in Deerpark, Ennistymon.

- Her son, Patrick [Parker], was born on 27 Jan in Ennistymon.

- Her daughter, Anne [Nana], was born in Ennistymon on 1 May.

- Her son, Michael, was born in Ennistymon on 8 Apr.

- She immigrated to the USA along with her daughter, Nana. They are listed on the Ship's Passenger List at the National Archives, film T-843l roll 35, v72, p283 lines 1 and 2 for the SS New England sailing from Queenstown on 13 Oct 1899, arriving at the port of Boston on 20 Oct 1899. It states- #2, ticket #2804, Margt Blake; age 58; female; widowed; housekeeper; able to read and write; Irish; last residence Passage; landing at Boston; final destination Somerville Mass; not having a ticket to her final destination; passage paid by son, John; in possession of either $15 or $7.50; never in the USA before; going to join son, John, at 7 Vine St, Somerville; never in prison or supported by charity; not a polygamist; not under contract labor; good mental and physical health; not deformed or crippled, traveling with her daughter, Annie. Since her last residence was in Passage rather than Ennistymon, she must have spent some time with her daughter, Ellen Blake Mostyn, who lived in Passage. Passage is very close to Queenstown.

- She is not listed in the Lowell, MA, city directory, although her daughter, Nannie, is listed.

- She is listed at the National Archives, Microfilm T-624, Roll 601, in the 1910 US Census taken on 23-25 Apr 1910 in MA, Middlesex County, e.d. 879, sheet 6B, line 81 as Margaret Blake living at 63 Willow St, Lowell, white female age 55 [this couldn't be right, she'd have been only 8 years old when her first child was born!] widowed, mother of 8 children 5 still living, born in Ireland, native tongue English, father and mother born in Ireland native tongue English, came to US in 1900, an alien, able to speak English, no profession, able to read and write, living with her daughter Nana Schallow [sic] and son-in-law Frank Schallow [sic].
