Web Notes notes for John MOSTYN
Before 1823 - He was born in Cadda, Dromahaire, Co Leitrim. His two brothers, Martin and George, stayed there, although George was later evicted and moved to Cloonagh. John moved to Mullaghdoo, Dromahaire, Co Leitrim, because of his first wife - that is where she was from. He went to school and mass "in the ditch" because of the penal laws. They had to have scouts out looking for the British.

1835 - He is listed as the witness [best man] at the marriage on 24 Feb of his brother, Martin Mostyn, in the Killenummery Parish RC Church Marriage Register.

1839 - He married Margaret Dunne on 3 Feb. The Killenummery Parish RC Church Marriage Register lists the witnesses as Michael Moran and Catherine McDonough. She might be a relative because she is the godmother of their son, William Mostyn. Michael Moran is probably a relative because an Edward Moran was the witness of his son, Henry's marriage. He is listed in the Killenummery Parish Baptism Register on 27 Aug 1839 as godfather of Margaret and Catherine Hannon, daughter[s?] of John Hannon and Bridget McMorry. Godmother was Ellen Gardiner.

1840 - His first son, Thomas Mostyn, was baptized on 3 Feb. His presumed father-in-law, Patrick Dunne, is listed as the godfather, and his presumed sister or mother, Alicia Mostyn, is listed as the godmother.

1844 - His son, Charles Mostyn, was baptized on 14 Feb. His presumed father-in-law, Patrick Dunne, is listed as the godfather. The godmother is Honor? McMorry?

1846 - His son, Patrick Mostyn, was baptized on 8 Mar. Listed godparents are Darby? Clark and Catherine Morrison.

1849 - His son, William Mostyn, was baptized on 9 Jun. Listed godparents are Francis Clark and Margaret McDonough.
His first wife, Margaret Dunne, must have died, perhaps in childbirth, because he married Mary Kivil on 7 Nov. The witnesses to the marriage were James Clark and Margaret McLoughlin?

1852 - His daughter, Elizabeth Mostyn, later known as Margaret, was baptized on 14 Jan. Listed godparents are John Kivil, probably her uncle, and Margaret Kilassand?

1853 - His son, William Mostyn, second of that name, was baptized 24 Dec. Listed godparents are James Moran and Catherine McDonough.

1856 - His son, Michael Mostyn, was baptized 29 Aug. Listed godparents are Michael Kivil and Catherine Horton.

1856 - He is listed in Griffiths Valuation, v82, p 99 Ireland, Co Leitrim, Barony Drumahair, Manorhamilton Union, Killanummery Parish, in the townland of Mullaghdoo [Ord.S.14], Map reference 10a, as John Morton [sic], Immediate Lessor George Lane Fox, occupying house, office and land, area 15 A. 1 R. 26 P., rateable Annual Valuation of land 11£ 15s. 0d., rateable Annual Valuation of buildings 0£ 10s. 0d., total annual valuation of rateable property 12£ 5s. 0d.

1861 - His son, Henry Mostyn, was baptized 1 July. Listed godparents are Patrick Mostyn and Bridget Kivil.

1864 - His son, Daniel Mostyn, was baptized 31 Dec. Listed godparents are Charles Kelly and Bridget Kivil.
Ireland began registration of all births in 1864, so John registered the birth of Daniel on 13 Jan 1865 at the Superintendent Registrar's District of Manorhamilton, Registrar's District of Dromahair, Co Leitrim. John listed himself as a farmer. Daniel was born at home at Mullaghdoo. John "signed" the birth registration with his mark; he was illiterate.

1871 - His son, Charles Mostyn, married on 23 Sep at the Catholic Chapel of Killargue, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The marriage certificate lists John Mostyn as Charles' father and a farmer.

1880 - His son, Patrick Mostyn, married on 27 Jan at the Catholic Chapel of Ennistymon, Co Clare, Ireland. The marriage certificate lists John Mostyn as Patrick's father, living at the time of the marriage, and a farmer.

1884 - His son, Henry Mostyn, married on 20 Oct at the Catholic Chapel of Ballinagar, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The marriage certificate lists John Mostyn as Henry's father and a farmer.

1885 - His second wife, Mary, died on 23 Jun at Mullaghdoo. He was the informant for her death certificate.

1895 - He died on 12 Dec. His death certificate states: Superintendent Registrar's District Manorhamilton, Registrar's District Dromahair, Co Leitrim, #150, John Mostyn, male, widower, 72 years, farmer, died 12 Dec 1895 at Mullaghdoo, probably paralysis, years, no medical attendant, informant Henry Mostyn of Mullaghdoo, son of deceased, present at death, registered 2 Jan 1896. His age must be inaccurate, like most of the ages given on Irish certificates. If he were only 72 at the time of his death, he would have been only 12 years old when he was the best man for his brother, Martin's wedding, and he would have been only 16 when he married Margaret Dunne. This is highly unlikely. Irish men tended to marry later in life. So he was probably older than 72 at his death.
