Web Notes notes for Henry STEELE
Came from Castlemartyr. Moved because of the job. In the 1870 Slater's Directory of Ireland, p41: "Stonemasons, Steel & Sons, Castle Martyr". He was already in Passage West by this year, so perhaps the Directory entry refers to his father and/or brothers.

1853 - He married Mary Fleming on 5 Dec at St Mary's, Passage West. Their wedding witnesses were James Nagle and Kate Driscoll. Married by John Holland, Parish Priest.

1854 - His son, John, was baptized at St Mary's, Passage West, on 10 Sep, so he was probably born shortly before that. The parents are listed as " Henry Still and Mary Flym". Godparents: James Nagle and Honora Flemming. The family lived on Church Lane, Passage.

1856 - Daughter, Hannah, was baptized on 20 Jan at St Mary's Church, Passage. Godparents Patrick Cowen & Margaret Warren. The family lived on Church Lane. On 4 Oct, he was a witness to the wedding of Alexander Gray and Honora Fleming (presumably his sister-in-law) at St Mary's Church, Passage West.

1857 - The baptismal register for their daughter, Mary, shows they were living at Church Lane, Passage, on 23 Aug.

1864 - His daughter, Mary, was born at home Chapel Lane, Passage West, Co Cork on 26 June. He is listed as a mason on her birth certificate. He was the informant on her birth certificate.

1881-Slater's Directory of Ireland, p234:
Stonemasons:
Steele, Henry, Passage
Steele, John, Passage

1886 - According to the marriage certificate of his daughter, Mary Steele, he was a mason and alive at the time of the marriage, 15 Aug.

1901 - He is listed in the 1901 Irish Census taken on 1 Apr 1901 on LDS film #812,392, 76|6c, Co Cork, Parliamentary Division S.E. Cork, Constabulary District Queenstown, Sub-District Passage West, Poor Law Union Cork, District Electoral Division Monkstown, Townland Passage West, Street Chapel Lane, Barony Kerricurrihy, Civil Parish Marmullane, p B-1 line 1 as: Henry Steele, head of family, Roman Catholic, can read & write, age 64, male, mason, married, born Co Cork, speaking Irish & English languages, living in a 7-room house built of stone, brick or concrete, with a roof of slate, iron or tile, and and 5 windows on the front of the house [a 2d of 4 classes of houses], with his wife, Mary Steele, daughter Nora Crosby, daughter Ellen Steele, daughter Elizabeth Steele, sister-in-law Catherine Meade, brother-in-law David Fleming, and a visitor, Minnie Morley.

Spoke old Gaelic.

According to family legend, Henry Steele had 2 brothers, John Steele and Tom Steele, one was Catholic and one was Protestant. Their father came from the Midlands of England. At first they worked at the Middleton Distillery, near Castlemartyr, Killagh. Then they went into farming in Killagh, then to Passage West. They helped build the Monkstown Church.
