Web Notes notes for John Of Muirratagh O'CARROLL
The Ely O'Carroll territory covered some 240 square miles in present-day Offaly and northern Tipperary. Its borders were marked by a series of castles belonging to different branches of the O'Carroll sept. These fortifications, some of which still exist, began at Cadamstown and Kinnity in the northeast and continued southward through the foothills of the Slieve Bloom to Leap, Ballybritt, Dungar, Clonlisk, Clashagad, Dunkerrin, Caetleroan and Clonymohan. Swinging northward again at Cullenwaine, O'Carroll castles stood at Rathenny, Emmell, Cloughjordan and Oxpark, Modreeny, Behamore, Kilfadda, Moatquarter, Birr, Ballindown, Banagher, Moystown, Cloghan, and Eglish.
The castle at Birr served as a principal O'Carroll stronghold until the late sixteenth century when Teige O'Carroll sold it to the Butler's, earls of Ormond. In 1620, as part of James I's plantation of Ely O'Carroll, Birr Castle was granted to Sir Laurance Parsons, ancestor of the present earl of Rosse.
Their role in a series of rebellions against the English between 1641 and 1690 reduced many O'Carroll families to the status of tenants on lands they had formerly owned. With his hopes of advancing himself in Ireland severely circumscribed by these land confiscations and the penal statutes that denied civil rights to Catholics, one member of the clan, Charles Carroll (1661-1720), emigrated in 1688 to Maryland.
There he realized his ambition of reconstituting his family's wealth and founding a new dynasty of Carrolls. His grandson Charles Carroll of Carrollton was the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. Charles Carroll of Carrollton's cousins Daniel Carroll II of Rock Creek and John Carroll, S.J., also had distinguished careers. Daniel served in the 1787 convention that produced the United States Constitution, and John became the first archbishop of the Catholic church in the United States. The property of another cousin, Daniel Carroll of Duddington, became the site of the United States Capital.

Maelroona-na-Fearoise (Melronious Barbatus), son of Teige and Mairgret's brother, founded the Franciscan Friary of Roscrea. His daughter Catherine married Sir E Butler (died 1464) the Earl of Ormond. His son John died in 1489 according to the annals of the Four Masters.
