Web Notes notes for Maolruanaidh O'CARROLL Chief Of Ely O'Carroll
Maolronna O'Carroll, son of John, died in 1532 according to the Annals of the Four Masters. He was styled by Lord Surrey "the most esteemed captain of the land who has ever been one of the King's (Henry VIII) greatest enemies and done most to hurt the King's subjects" - Carew Mss 1525. This same man was also "The noblest and most illustrious Gaeidhel that was in Lieth Modha" -according to the Annals of Loch Có. He was a patron of Roscrea and a manuscript in the Bibliotheque Royale in Brussels tells us that circa 1490 Maolronna built the Franciscan Friary in the town. A slab formerly housed there commemorates the event with the following inscription (translated from the Latin): 'Pray for the soul of Mulrony son of Shaun O'Carroll who was lord of Ely and Prince of Ireland in 1523, who caused me to be made'.

Annals of the Four Masters:-
1532 AD, O'Carroll Maolroona, the most distinguished man of his tribe for renown, valour, prosperity, and excellence, to whom poets, travellers, ecclesiastics, and literary men were most thankful; and who gave most entertainment, and bestowed more presents than any other who lived of his lineage, died. He was the supporting mainstay of all persons; the rightful, victorious ruler of his race; the powerful, young warrior in the march of tribes; the active, triumphant champion of Munster; a precious stone, a carbuncle gem; the anvil of knowledge; and the golden pillar of the Elyans (Ely). He died in his fortress on the festival day of St Mathew; and his son, Ferganaim, was appointed his successor.55

In the Carew Manuscript:
Who has ever been one of the King's greatest enemies, and done most hurt to the King's subjects.55

Maolroona was at war with Butler, earl of Ormond, a short time before his death. Maolroona's sons defeated Ormond, and took many horses, which were very valuable, also some ordnance, called Fubcuin.55
