Web Notes notes for William DE FERRERS 3d Earl Of Derby
From "Complete Peerage England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britian" by George E Cokayne, CS421.G2 1982, v IV, page 236, Desmond:
Thomas fitz Morice Fitzgerald married before 7 Feb 1283, Margaret, daughter of Sir Thomas de Berkeley of Berkeley, county Gloucester [Lord Berkeley], by Joan, daughter of William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby.

Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (194:6) and Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" (STAFFORD, p.171) identifies him and SIBYL as WILLIAM's parents. Per Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Derby, pp. 192-194), William was one of the adherents of Henry, the young king, in his rebellion against his father, HENRY II, of 1173. He sacked and burned Nottingham in 1174. Later that year, he submitted to KING HENRY, surrendering his castles at Tutbury and Duffield. He was taken by THE KING, along with other rebellious nobles to France, where they were imprisoned at Caen. He became a crusader and died at the siege of Acre in Palestine in 1190.

FERRERS, the name of a great Norman-English feudal house, derived from Ferrières-St-Hilaire, to the south of Bernay, in Normandy. Its ancestor Wakelin was slain in a feud during the Conqueror’s minority, leaving a son Henry, who took part in the Conquest.

Oakham Castle dates back to the days of Wakelin de Ferrers, a Norman baron, who built the castle around 1180-90. Today the castle houses a collection of elaborate horseshoes, the source of which is a unique custom to Rutland.
