Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (82:30), (127:29), (194:7). Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Derby, pp. 194-196). In 1194 he was sheriff of Notts and Derby. About that time, prior to the return of King Richard from his captivity in Germany, he supported the Justiciar against JOHN, Count of Mortain (the future King JOHN). He and his brother-in-law, Ranulf III, Earl of Chester besieged Nottingham Castle. He had a prominent role at the second coronation of King Richard. He was invested with additional lands by King JOHN and, later, by King HENRY III. in 1217 he assisted the regent, WILLIAM MARSHAL Earl of Pembroke, in raising the siege of Lincoln Castle. He and the Earl of Chester commanded the royal forces which took and razed the castle of Montsorel. He went on a crusade in 1218. In 1230 he accompanied King HENRY III on his expedition to Brittany and Poitou. In 1244 he was summoned for military service against the Scots. He died in 1247, having long been afflicted with the gout.

4th Earl of Derby, or Earl of Ferrieres. Married in 1192 Agnes de Keveliok, sister and coheir of Randolf, Earl of Chester and Lincoln, and 3rd daughter of Hugh, Earl of Chester. He died in 1247.
