According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage", In 1277,1281, & 1282 (in the last year being a knight), he did part of the service due from his father in Wales. He was summoned to a military council at Gloucester in 1287 and against the Scots several times from 1291 to 1316. In 1291 he was, for a short time, among the candidates for the throne of Scotland by virtue of his (illigitimate) descent from King William the Lion. He served Kings Edward I & II in many capacities and was summoned to parliament 1298-1315. He served with distinction in Gascony for which he was rewarded with the castle of Wark after his relative, Robert de Ros of Wark, rebelled against the king.
