According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage", in 1315 he was admitted as a banneret in the King's household. He was summoned for service in Scotland 5 times 1316-1335 and to parliament from 1317 to 1339/40. He remained loyal in 1321-22 during the Earl of Lancaster's rebellion. A listing of his numerous services to the crown : 1317-18 as joint commander in Scotland, he received the surrender of Knaresbourough; 1324 joint warden of the Yorkshire coast; 1324 served in Gascony; 1326 sheriff of Yorkshire. In Jan 1326/7, he was one of two barons chosen to announce to King Edward II that he had been deposed. He served on the council of regency Feb 1236/7. 1327-9 he represented England in peace negotiations with Scotland and France. During King Edward III's absence in Flanders, 1337-8, he was one of the commissioners (district of East Riding, Yorkshire) to preserve the peace of the country. 1339 was one of the guarantors of the treaty for the marriage of Prince Edward to Margaret of Brabant; 1340 one of the captains appointed to keep Edward Balliol informed of the intentions of the English parliament; 1341 helped defend Newcastle against the Scots; 1342 supplied men and served the king personally in Brittany.
