Web Notes notes for Adalbert Marquis Of Tuscany
Stuart's "Royalty For Commoners (31:39), (265:39). Count of Lucca, Margrave of Tuscany.
Maurice Chaume, in Table 4 of v.4 of "Les origines du duche de Bourgogne" (Dijon, 1925-31), refers to him as Aubert II, Marquis of Tuscany. Just after 843, when the Empire was divided between the three sons of LOUIS THE PIOUS by the Treaty of Verdun, Adalbert became ruler of what was then becoming known as the March of Tuscany. This was a conglomeration of several counties. His power was almost viceregal. After Emperor LOUIS II's death in 875 a period of civil war ensued and Adalbert I and his son, Adalbert II ruled what in effect became an independent state.
