Web Notes notes for William DE DOUVRES
Fulbert and Athelize had at least two sons, Hugh and William. There may also have been another son, who, as Elias de Chilham, witnessed Hugh's charter to St. Bertin. As family members were the benefactors of the Abbey of St. Bertin at St. Omer, the charters of that Abbey enable us to construct the descent of the family in the twelfth century.
280 William de Douvres, the younger brother of Hugh, was a soldier of the Empress in the Civil War. A hostile writer, the author of the Gesta Stephani, describes him as "a man skilful in war, cunning and fierce". In 1147 William took the Cross and died in the East on the Second Crusade (Eyton's Shropshire, vol. IX, p. 66).
