Web Notes notes for Merovech King Of The Franks
From the book "The Birth of France Warriors, Bishops and Long-Haired Kings" by Katharine Scherman, ISBN 0-394-56089-2, page 32-4:
Attila the Hun was shaking the walls of the town of Orléans with his battering rams, and the people within were prostrate in prayer, when he learned of the approach of the Roman general Aetius and his allies from the south. Attila's main strength was in his horsemen, and he knew that he needed open country to be effective. He withdrew his armies northeast, to the Catalaunian Plains, the flat farming country east of Paris. There, in 451, took place the battle which decided the course of European history. The battle lasted one day. Among the allies of Rome was a small band of Franks, making on this day their first recorded appearance as 'foederati' (allies of Rome). Their leader was Merovech, the eponym of the Merovingian dynasty. Merovech's brother fought on the side of Attila; for in this battle German fought German. The outcome of the battle was a draw. but it resulted in Attila's losing his zest for the further demolition of Gaul. He retreated in good order with the remains of his army and went back to Pannonia. The chief fighters in the conflict that decided Europe's future were dead within two years of its resolution. One relatively minor figure remained; Merovech still lived, with the remnants of his brave band of Franks, the inheritors of ravaged Gaul. Within two generations his descendants would transform the waning star of the Roman Empire into the dominant kingdom of the early Middle Ages.

Defeated Attila 'The Hun' in 451. Merovingian, dynasty of kings that ruled the Franks, a Germanic tribe, from AD 481 to 751. The kings were descendants of the chief of the Salian Franks, Merovech or Merowig, who ruled from 448 to 458 and from whom the dynasty's name was derived. The first Merovingian ruler was Clovis I, grandson of Merovech.
