Richard was the founder of the second house of Douvres or Chilham. He was a bastard son of King John by his cousin, a daughter of Hameline "Plantagenet", Earl of Warenne, who was the bastard son of Count Geoffrey of Anjou, grandfather of King John. (Robert of Gloucester; cf. The Genealogist, n.s., vol. XXII, p. 108). The second house has been considered in an excellent and fully documented monograph by Mr. G. I. Turner in The Genealogist, n.s., vol. XXII, pp. 105-109).126
