Morice fitz Gerald, one of the conquerors of Ireland

From the book "The Oxford History of Ireland" edited by R. F. Foster, 1992, ISBN 0-19-285271-X, page 48:
King Dermot MacMurrough initially recruited Richard fitzGilbert de Clare, earl of Pembroke, and a group of Cambro-Norman barons including the half-brothers Maurice FitzGerald and Robert FitzStephen, both sons of the Welsh princess Nesta [to help him regain his kingdom]. These latter were promised Wexford and two adjoining cantreds for their services, while de Clare, better known as 'Strongbow', was offered Dermot's daughter, Aoife in marriage and promised the whole province of Leinster on Dermot's death. Between 1169-1171 the Cambro-Normans not only reconquered all Leinster including Dublin for Dermot, but invaded the neighboring province of Meath and harried Tighearnán O'Rourke's kingdom of Bréifne.

Eldest son. Ancestor of the Fitzgerald family, the head of which is the Duke of Leinster.33

A leader in the Norman Invasion of Ireland. Held Llanstephan in Wales. Ancestor of the Barons of Offaly and Naas. Maurice Fitzgerald was grantee of Naas, in Kildare, and lands in Wicklow.

Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (178:3), he was lord of Lanstephen, Wales, Steward of St. David's, landed in Wexford, 1 Sep 1176.

The Fitzgeralds were one of the great families of County Kildare. The founder of the family, Gerald, arrived in England with William the Conqueror and granted lands in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He married Nesta, a Welsh princess, and they had four sons, one of whom, Maurice, took part in the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169. He was granted the territory of Offelan, part of present day central Kildare, and it was from this beginning that the Fitzgerald family grew in wealth and power.
In May 1316, John Fitzthomas was created the first Earl of Kildare. Though the passage of time saw constant fluctuations in the family fortunes, it was the failed rebellion of Silken Thomas, son of Garret Og, the ninth earl, in 1537, that ended the power of the Fitzgeralds. Subsequent generations remained loyal to the English Crown, and in 1766, the family was given the title of the Dukedom of Leinster, a title they still hold today. The Fitzgeralds erected many castles, including those at Kilkea, at Woodstock in Athy, and at Maynooth, their stronghold. Today the Fitzgeralds have no major properties in the county, and the present Duke resides in England.
