Extract from "Houses of Clare: by Hugh W Weir:
Cappagh House, Ennis
Ceapach = the cultivated place
Associated families: Kirwan, Curtin, Gregg, Hickey
Location: North of the Spancel Hill to Barefield road, 5.5 km northeast of Ennis
Condition: demolished
Demesne: Quantity of mature trees. Original entrance gateway. A few walls standing. The gate lodge is standing, uninhabited.
Features: This was a plain, gable-ended, two-story Georgian house, facing south, with a yard and utility buildings to the rear. There is a modern bungalow on the property now. The one-story, three bay, brick-built gate lodge was erected across the orad from the gates, which had tall cut stone gate piers incorporating scrolls. There was a small wooded garden area. There are the remains of a ring fort to the northwest.
History: Richard Gregg lived at Cappa in 1814. By 1855 John Curtin was in possession of this house and its 135 acre estate, according to Griffith, but the Greggs are recorded as having been "of Cappagh" in the nineteenth century, and as having intermarried with the Vesey Fitzgeralds of Ashgrove and other leading families. This house was the home of Dr J.A. F. Gregg, DD, the famous Church of Ireland Archbishop fo Armagh, whose grandfather, John, had been Bishop of Cork in the 19th century, and whose mother was Barbara Fitzgerald, a descendant of the Fitzgibbons, the White Knights. His uncle, Rt Hon James Fitzgerald, was Prime Sergeant of Ireland.
