Web Notes notes for Abraham Isaac HEIDENHEIM
1811/12 -He was born in Schnaittach, Bavaria, Germany.

1833-36 - He probably came over to the US between 1833 (his death certificate says he was in the US for 48 years, so he would have immigrated about 1833) and 1836 (his 1855 census says he lived 19 years in NYC, which would have been 1836). He is not listed in the NYC directories before 1843.

1840 - He made a Declaration of Intention to become a citizen of the US on 25 April. The Declaration states: City of New York, ss. BE IT REMEMBERED that Abraham Haedeanham [sic] late of Germany appeared in the Marine Court of the City of New York, held in the City Hall of the said City, on the twenty fifth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty (the said Court being a Court of Record, having Common Law Jurisdiction, and a Clerk and Seal,) and declared on oath, in open Court, that it was bona fide his intention to become a CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, and to renounce forever all Allegiance and Fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the King of Bavaria. In Testimony Whereof, the Seal of the said Marine Court of the City of New York is hereunto affixed, this 25 day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty and of our Independence the sixty-fourth. [Signed by the clerk, name unreadable].
In Dec 1840, his son, Isaac, was born in Manhattan.

1841 or 43 - His daughter, Sarah, was born in May. He is listed in the 1843 New York City Directory, Library of Congress film 962:2, p. 160 as Abraham Heidenheim, a dealer in fancy goods at 43 Columbia St, Manhattan, NY. The death on 20 Dec 1843 of Carolina Heidenheim, age 32, of 43 Columbia St, born in NY, from Febris Neroola, buried at RemfromCity [removed from city?] is recorded on LDS film #1,314,277, Manhattan deaths, liber 14, p1-2. It is likely she was his first wife.

1844 -22 Feb: He rented the store at 43 Columbia St, Manhattan from H. F. Wheeler. The lease was recorded 20 Jun 1848, and can be found in LDS film #888,550, NYC conveyances, Liber 505, p 445-6: This is to certify that I have let and rented unto A Heidenheim store No 43 Columbia Street to be used as a Dry Goods Store without any other privilege the cellar of which belongs to the store on the corner and no privilege in the yard for the term of Five years from the first day of May next 1845? 1848? at the yearly rent of One hundred Dollars payable viz first of Aug first of Nov first of Feby 1849 and first of May The premises are not to be used or occupied for any business deemed extra hazardous on account of fire nor shall the same or any part thereof be let or underlet without the written consent of the Landlord under the penalty of forfeiture and damages Given under my hand the twenty second day of Feby 1844 H. F. Wheeler. . . Recorded the preceeding at the request of Thomas G Stagg June 20th 1848 at 50 mins past 10 AM.

1844 - 9 Apr: He became a citizen of the US at NY Superior Court in NY City on 9 Apr 1844. The court record states: NEW YORK SUPERIOR COURT In the Matter of Abraham Haedeanham [sic] On His Naturalization City and County of New York, ss. Abraham Rigel of the City and County of New York being duly sworn, says, that he is well acquainted with the above-named applicant, and that the said applicant has resided within the United States for the continued term of five years at least, next preceding the present time, without being at any time, during the said five years, out of the territory of the United States, and within the State of New York, one year at least immediately preceding this application; and that during that time he has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same. [Signed by] Abraham Rigel. Sworn in Open Court, this 9 day of April 1844 [signed by clerk, name unreadable] I, Abraham Heideanheim [sic] do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and that I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, of whom I was before a subject. Sworn in Open Court, this 9th day of April 1844 [signed by] Abraham Heidenheim [signed by the clerk, name unreadable]. This indicates he was a British rather than Bavarian subject, but it is a form document, with no blank line to insert the correct former sovereign. I think the court clerk carelessly used the wrong form. There is evidence that the clerk was careless in that he spelled "Heidenheim" as Haedeanham and Heideanheim on the same page! Note, however, that Abraham's signature clearly spells out "Heidenheim."
He is listed in the 1844 New York City Directory, p. 163 as a dealer in fancy goods at 43 Columbia St, NY, NY.

1845 - His daughter, Rebecca, was born on 12 Oct. She was the first child by his second wife, Hanna.

1846 - His son, Jacob, was born on 20 Aug.

1847 - His son, Louis, was born.

1849 - He bought the land and house at 29 Columbia St, Manhattan, NY on 27 Mar, and had it recorded on 2 Apr. The deed, recorded at NY County, Liber 519, p 88-90, states that he bought it alone, not with his wife [if he had one then] from James & Jane Woods of NY City, for $3,950, subject to a mortgage then on the property of $2,200 recorded in Registers office in Liber 260 p 442, 18 Mar 1843, which Abraham assumed. The property is described as being 21 feet 10-1/2 inches wide in front & back, and 100 feet long. The deed says the property is shown as lot #75 on a map made of the estate of Isaac Clason deceased by Stephen Ludlam, City Surveyor, bounded easterly in the front by Columbia St, westerly in the rear by lot #94, southerly by lot # 74 and northerly by lot #76.

1850 - His son, Leopold Michael, was born on 26 May.
Abraham is listed at the National Archives, Microfilm M-432, Roll 550, in the 1850 US Census taken on 4 Sep 1850 in NY, NY County, ward 13, page 231, line 4 as Abraham Heidenheim, residing in Manhattan, age 35, male, a dealer in dry goods, value of real estate owned - 4,300, born in Germany, living with his wife, Hannah Heidenheim, his son, Isaac Heidenheim, his daughter, Sarah Heidenheim, his daughter Rebecca Heidenheim, his son, Jacob Heidenheim, his son, Louis Heidenheim, his son, Leopold, [who was called by his second name, Michael, Mike and Mac, is listed twice] Heidenheim, a Josephine Heidenheim age 30 born in Ireland [is she a sister-in-law?], a Louisa Heidenheim age 24 born in Germany [is she a sister?], and two of his clerks, David Mynzisheimer [His wife, Hannah's maiden name was Minzesheimer, perhaps David was a relative of hers] age 24 born in Germany and Isaac Kalzanu? age 22 born in Germany.

1852/3 - He is listed in the NY City Directory, p. 238 as a dealer in dry goods at 43 Columbia St, house at 29 Columbia St. Listed the same in the 1853-54 directory p. 297; 1854/5 directory p. 326. Also listed in the NY City Business directory under Dry Goods in 1853/4 p. 53.

1859 - He made his will on 14 September. He left $500 to his daughter, Sarah, and $300 to his son, Isaac. He left everything else to his wife, Hannah. He probably made no special provision for his other children because they were the children of his second wife, Hannah, and they would be taken care of under her will. His will is set forth below.

1862 - To pay for the Civil War, the Internal Revenue Act of July 1, 1862 [12 Stat 432] was intended to provide Internal Revenue to support the government. An annual tax was levied on income in excess of $600. Annual licenses were required for certain trades and occupations. Monthly specific duties were placed on manufacturers and certain articles. Assistant assessors compiled three lists of persons liable for taxation; annual lists, monthly lists, and special lists. The tax was abolished effective 1 July 1873 [17 Stat 401]. Tax assessment lists for 1862-66 are in the Nat'l Archives. Abraham is listed in the annual assessment list for NY City, 5th Collection District, Nat'l Archives film M603, roll 59, as: Date-Oct 20, 1862; Name-Heidenheim, Abram; Residence-29 Columbia St 11, Class B Licenses For what purpose-Retail dealer; Amount of Tax-$10.00.

1867 - On May 28 he and his wife purchased the land and building at 348 East 32nd St, Manhattan, liber 1024 page 31?, NY Co Conveyances.

1870 - NY City took 2 censuses in 1870. After the first enumeration in July, officials realized that too many people were omitted, so they decided to perform a second enumeration, which occurred in December.
Listed in the first enumeration, Year: 1870; Census Place: New York Ward 13 District 8, New York, New York; Roll: M593_991; Page: 274, lines 29-33 as:

Listed in the second enumeration at the National Archives, M593, Roll 1031, in the second enumeration of the US Census taken on 22 Dec 1870 in NY County, ward 13, 3rd District, page 48, line 30 as Abraham Heidenheim, male age 56, a dealer in dry goods from Prussia residing at 29 Columbia St, Manhattan with his wife, Hannah and son Leopold. The second enumeration unfortunately did not ask all the questions in the first enumeration, so no further information is given. He is listed in the NY City Directory as a dealer in dry goods at 43 Columbia St, house at 29 Columbia St. His son, Jacob, is listed as a merchant, living at the same house.

His sons, Jacob & Leopold, are listed as dry goods dealers at 43 Columbia St, living at 29 Columbia St. The business is also listed as "J & L Heidenheim, drygoods," so the sons must have taken over the business.
