Web Notes notes for Sarah HEIDENHEIM
1841 - She was born in Manhattan, NY in May. Named after her paternal grandmother.

1843 - Her father is listed in the New York City Directory, Library of Congress film 962:2, p. 160 as Abraham Heidenheim, a dealer in fancy goods at 43 Columbia St, NY, NY. She was living there with him.

1850 - She is listed at the National Archives, film M-432, Roll 550, in the US Census taken on 4 Sep 1850 in NY, NY County, ward 13, page 231, line 7 as Sarah Heidenheim, residing in Manhattan, age 8, female, born in NY, attended school within the year, living with her father, Abraham Heidenheim, stepmother, Hannah Heidenheim, brother, Isaac, sister Rebecca, brother, Jacob, brother, Louis, her "twin brothers", Mac and Leopold, a Josephine Heidenheim age 30 born in Ireland [is she an aunt-in-law?], a Louisa Heidenheim age 24 born in Germany [is she an aunt?], and two of her father's clerks, David Mynzesheimer age 24 born in Germany [probably a relative of her stepmother, whose maiden name was Minzesheimer] and Isaac Kalzanu? age 22 born in Germany [relationship unknown]. I think the "twin brothers" are really the same person, her brother, Leopold Michael, who went by his second name. I think he was counted twice.

1852-55 - The following NY City Directory listings for Sarah's father show where she was living over the years:
Year Page Listing
1852/53 238 Heidenheim, Abraham, dry goods 43 Columbia St, h 29 Columbia St
1853/54 297 "

1856 - She married Benjamin Franklin. I think she and her husband lived with her parents at first, because I could find no listing in the NY City Directories for Benjamin Franklin.

1857 - Her son, Charles Benjamin Franklin, was born on 19 Jan in NY City.

1858 [about] - Her son, Isaac H Franklin, was born in NY.

1859 - Her father made a will on 14 Sep, leaving Sarah $500.00.

It looks as if no one was home when the census taker came because most of the census is not filled in, and the ages for the family are close, but not quite right. Perhaps the census taker took the information from a neighbor. She is listed as Sarah Franklin, age 20, female, living with her husband, Benjamin Franklin, age 28, male, born in Germany, her son, Charles Franklin, age 3, male, her son, Isaac, age 2 male, born in Vermont, and Hannah Haden, 48, born in Germany [relationship unknown].

Dear Sadie I hope you will excuse me for not writing you before this but I suppose you have heard how awful poorly I have been. I don't have ????? when I am so awful sick but I am a little better and thought I must hasten to write before something turns up to prevent me from writing again. I was so pleased to receive your letter and to note that all were well but very sorry to hear that you have since been sick but hope you have long since fully recovered, dear Sadie. You said in your letter that you wished you could be with me so as to look after me. I too would like you as well as all of you to be where we could see one another often. I don't think it would be a very pleasant job for you to be with a sick person all the time and as much as I would like to have you around me, I would wish you something pleasanter my dear girl. I hope you and the Family are all well. I suppose your Mother [Sarah's daughter, Lillian] is as busy as ever and how is my little sweetheart Carrie [Sarah's granddaughter, Carrie Jacobs, by her daughter, Lillian] and Sam [Sarah's grandson, Sam Jacobs, by her daughter, Lillian] and his wife [Rebecca DeLaFuente]. I presume they are looking forward with great delight [they were expecting the birth of their first child, Lillian Jacobs] and is Bennie [Sarah's grandson, Benjamin Jacobs] still working. How is your father [Adolph Jacobs]. I suppose you are looking forward with pleasure to the Holidays so near at hand and I hope that you and the rest of Family will enjoy them very much. As for myself, nothing worries me as much as my continued bad health. If that would improve I could get along with almost anything. I suppose you have heard that Abe [Sarah's grandson by her daughter, Carrie] and Vera [Abe's wife] have moved. She came in the other day the first time in a long while. She says they have a nice flat and invited us to come and see them. I am very much pleased that you and Fro [Sarah's granddaughter, Fromit, by her son, Charles] get on so well and I hope she will continue to be a good girl. As I can not think of anything more to write at this time, I will have to close with love and best wishes from your Ever Loving Grandma, Sarah Franklin A very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all.
