1361886 -She was born on July 1 at 183 Wentworth Buildings, Whitechapel, London, England. Her birth certificate #136 says: Registration District - Whitechapel; 1886 Birth in the Sub-district of Whitechapel Church in the County of Middlesex; #136; born - First July 1886 183 Wentworth Buildings; Name - Rebecca; Sex - girl; father - Abraham Delafuente; mother - Maria Hannah [sic] Delafuente formerly Bronkhorst; Occupation of father - cigar maker; informant - A. Delafuente father 183 Wentworth Buildings, Whitechapel; registered - 28 July 1886; John Hall, Registrar. Probably named for her paternal aunt. Her parents were born in Holland, but they married in England. The family was earning their way to America from Holland. They spent many years in England, from 1866-1893.

1891 -She is listed in the English census, Administrative County London, Civil Parish St Mary, Urban Sanitary District Whitechapel, Ecclesiastical Parish St Jude, RG12/280, Registration District Whitechapel, Subregistration District Whitechapel Church, e.d. 10, folio 12, page 25, Schedule #119 as: Rebecca Delafuente, daughter, single, 4, no occupation, born Whitechapel, London, living at 116 Houlston St, London, with father, Abraham, mother, Mary, sister, Betsy, brother, Simon, sister, Leah, brother, Solomon, sister, Sarah, and brother, Henry.

1892 -Her father, Abraham, left England for America in Sep. She and the rest of the family stayed behind.

1893 -She and her family, except her sister, Bessie, who was already married, immigrated to America, sailing from Liverpool on the S.S. Ohio, and arriving at the port of Philadelphia on 5 June, to join her father in Boston. She is listed on the ship's passenger list as Rebecca Delafuente, age 6 years, female, single, no occupation, able to read and write, nationality-Belgian, last residence London, Seaport for landing in US Philadelphia, Final Destination in the US Boston, having a ticket to the final destination, by whom was passage paid-mother, never in the US before, going to join her father, Abraham Delafuente, 10 Sudbury Place off Weston, Roxbury, Boston, never in prison or supported by charity, not under contract to labor in the US, good health, mental and physical, not deformed or crippled, ticket #12518. The above is from the handwritten ship passenger list. In 1937 the list was typed because of the poor quality of the original. In the typed version of the passenger list, her native country is given as Belgium! That is where her mother was born, not her.

1894-95 -Her father is listed in the Boston City Directory as Abram Delafuente, cigarmaker, with a house at 8 Sudbury Pl. She was probably living with him there.

1896 -Her father is listed in the Boston City Directory as Abraham Delafuente, cigarmaker, with a house at 255 Heath St. Her brother, Simon, is listed the same. She was probably living there with him.

1897 -Her father is listed in the Boston City Directory as a cigarmaker with a house at 136 Cabot St. Her brother, Simon, is listed the same. She was probably living there with him.

1898 -Her father, Abraham, is listed in the Boston City Directory, p. 434, as a cigarmaker with a house at 12 Weston Place, Boston. Her brother, Simon, is also listed as a cigarmaker at 12 Weston Place, Boston. She was probably living there, too.

Found her listed in the 1900 US Census, MA, film T623, roll 684, MA, Suffolk Co., e.d. 1420, sheet 5, lines 20-26 as Rebecca Delafuent, white, female, born July 1886, age 13, single, born in England, her father born in Holland and her mother born in Belgium, immigrated to the US in 1893, 7 years in the US, attended school 9 months of the year, able to read, write and speak English, living at 12 Weston Place, Boston, MA, with her mother, Mary, her father, Amos [sic], her brother, Simon, her brother Henry, her brother, Solomon, and her sister, Sarah.

1901 -Her father, Abraham, is listed in the Boston City Directory, p. 456, as a cigarmaker with a house at 12 Weston Place, Boston. She was probably living with him at that time.

1906 -Her father, Abraham, is listed in the Boston City Directory, p. 541, as a cigarmaker boarding with at his son, Simon's house at 8 Bower St, Roxbury, slong with her brother, Henry. She was probably living with them at that time.

1907-08 -Her husband is listed in the Boston City Directory as a cigarmaker boarding at 8 Bower St., Roxbury, which appears to be the house of her brother, Simon DLF. Her brother, Henry A Delafuente also boards there. At age 22, she married Samuel Jacobs in Boston on 2 December 1908. The marriage is recorded at the MA Registry of Vital Statistics, Boston, MA, Marriages 1908 v 581 p 284. It states: #6532, m 2 Dec 1908 by Herbert M Monks, Justice of the Peace, at Boston:

1910 -She is listed at the National Archives, Microfilm T624, Roll 619, in the US Census taken on 19 April 1910 in MA, Suffolk County, e.d. #1469, sheet 10A, line 17 as Rebecca Jacobs living at 709 Seventh St, Boston, white female age 23 married for over a year, born in England, father born in Holland, mother born in Holland, native language English, no profession, immigrated to the US in 1894, able to read and write, renting her home, living with her husband, Samuel Jacobs and her daughter, Lillian M Jacobs. Her parents and brothers Simon and Henry moved to NY City.

1913 -Her father died in Brooklyn, NY on 23 Dec, age 65, and was buried at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, NY.

1920 -She is listed at the National Archives, Microfilm T625, Roll 734, in the US Census taken on 10 Jan 1920 in MA, Suffolk County, e.d. #284, sheet 10, line 90 as Rebecca Jacobs living at 652 East Seventh St, S. Boston, white married female, age 33, renting her home, living with her husband, Samuel Jacobs, her daughter, Lillian Jacobs, son, Samuel Jacobs, and daughter, Marion Jacobs, immigrated to US in 1893, naturalized in 1908, able to read and write, born in England with English as her mother tongue, her father born in Holland with Dutch as his mother tongue, her mother born in Holland with Dutch as her mother tongue, able to speak English, no profession.

1924 -Her sister, Bessie DLF Woolf, died in Boston on 3 Feb, and was buried at Hand-in-Hand Cemetery in Boston.

1930 -She is listed at the National Archives in the 1930 US Census taken on 8 Apr 1930 in MA, Suffolk County, Microfilm T626, Roll 846, e.d. #13-284, sheet 17A, line 4: Rebecca Jacobs, wife, renting her home for $28 per month, owned a radio, not living on a farm, white married female, age 43, married at age 21, did not attend school since 1929, able to read and write, born England, father born Holland, mother born Holland [sic], able to speak English, immigrated to the US in 1889 [sic] no occupation, living at 128 Emerson St, South Boston, ward 6, a 3-family house (appears to be in the middle floor), with her husband, Samuel, son, Samuel, and daughter, Marion.

1940 - Listed in the US Census, Massachusetts, Suffolk County, e.d 15-237, sheet 8B lines 49-52, living at 128 Emerson St, Boston:

1940 -Her mother died on 7 Jul at the Jewish Memorial Hospital, Boston, and was buried at Hand-in-Hand Cemetery, Boston. Her mother had been living with Rebecca's sister, Leah, in NYC, until she went blind. After she went blind, she moved to Boston to live with Rebecca.

1945 -Her husband shot himself in bed and died on 19 Nov. He was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Boston. After his death, she worked for the I.T.O.A. Taxi Co., washing cab windows, then as a waitress at the White Tower and Joe & Nemo's in Scollay Square, Boston.

1949 -Her brother, Solomon DLF, made his will on 1 July and left her an equal 1/3 of the residue of his estate.

1951 -Her brother, Solomon DLF, changed his will, making a codicil on 22 May, and left her an equal 1/4 of the residue of his estate.

1953 -Her brother, Solomon DLF died in Boston on 7 July, and was buried at Hand-in-Hand Cemetery, Boston. She was the informant for his death certificate. Since his wife and only child were already dead, he left her and some other relatives a legacy. On 16 July, Frank Wilson, the executor of Solomon's estate, filed a petition to allow probate of Solomon's will, Estate Administration #370494, Suffolk Co Probate Court, Boston, MA, naming Rebecca Jacobs of 499 Huntington Ave, Boston, Mass, sister of Solomon, as one of the heirs-at-law and next of kin.

1955 -In Jan, she received $3,500.00 as partial distribution of her legacy under the will of her brother, Solomon DLF.
-On 16 Aug, Frank Wilson, executor of her brother, Solomon DLF's estate, filed a petition with the Suffolk Co Probate Court requesting the Court to allow his final accounting [distribution] of the estate. Rebecca, Rachel Hertz, Sarah Moffie and Abraham Gordon signed the petition. The Judge allowed the petition, and she received another $2,214.00 as her final distributive share, bringing her total legacy to $5,714.00. Eventually, she lived off this inheritance.

-She loved music and had a good sense of humor. She had a good singing voice and loved to sing the blues. She also enjoyed dancing and playing the piano by ear. She gave my parents half the money to pay for their first car around 1954. She used to make rolls in the shape of braids for me when I came to visit her. She lived at 499 Huntington Ave, Boston. She lived with my family for a few years when she was unable to care for herself. She and I shared a bedroom and used to go to sleep holding hands. Later she lived at Bayside Nursing home in Dorchester. She taught me to knit and crochet. She was about 5'1" & heavyset.

1965 -She died on Dec 1. Her death certificate, #11920 says: Date of death - 1 Dec 1965; Name of deceased - Rebecca Jacobs; Sex - F; Color - W; Condition - widowed; age - 79 years 4 months; Name of husband - Samuel Jacobs; Residence - Bayside Manor Nursing Home, Boston, MA; Occupation - retired waitress; Place of death - Roslindale Gen Hospital; Place of birth - London, Eng; Names & birthplaces of parents - Abraham DeLaFuente Germany, Mary Bronkhurst [sic] Holland; Disease or cause of death - general arteriosclerosis, advanced Parkinson's disease, & chronic urinary infection; place of burial - Mt Hope Cem, Boston, MA; date of record - 6 Dec 1965. The night before she died, when she was in a coma, my mother put her face against hers and told her she loved her. Rebecca pressed her lips against her daughter's face. My mother will never forget that. The last words she said to my brother, Kevin, were "Go get my hat and bring the car out front, and let's go out for a night on the town." The last word she ever said was "Brother," the name of her son. Buried Mt Hope Cemetery, Walk Hill St, Jamaica Plain, Boston.

Her obituary appears in the Boston Globe 2 Dec 1965, morning edition p21, col 3 and evening edition p61 col 5: JACOBS-Formerly of South Boston, Rebecca (DeLaFuente), widow of Samuel Jacobs and mother of Samuel J. Jacobs of Hyde Park, Mrs. Lillian Caudle of Uxbridge, and Mrs. Marion L. Mostyn of Dorchester. Funeral Services will be held at the McHoul Funeral Home, 354 Adams St, at Neponset av., Friday Dec 3 at 11 am. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours Wednesday 7 to 10 and Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 10.
