O'Flaherty - Ó Flaithbheartaigh. A sea-faring people of Connacht and enemies of the 14 Tribes of Galway. They boast genealogy back 3,000 years.The sept was driven by the Normans, mainly the Burkes, to west Connacht where their territory, including the Aran Islands, stretched from Killary harbor to Galway city. In the middle ages apparently over the gates of Galway was the prayer 'From the fury of the O’Flahertys, O Lord protect us’. Another sept called O’Laverty and O Laithbheartaigh in Irish is to be found in Co. Donegal. These were fewer and less important than the O’Flahertys. The last Chief of the Name, Rory O’Flaherty (1629-1718) was a historian and author.
