Web Notes notes for Flan O'DEMPSEY
The origin of the Dempsey name comes from the Irish sept Diomasaigh of Clanmaliere on the borders of Counties Laois and Offaly, Leinster, and is derived from "Diomasach" meaning proud.
In the fourth Century, the Monarch of Ireland Cathaoir Mor, had an eldest son Rossa Falighe which divided into several clans including the O'Connors Faly, O'Dunnes, and the O'Dempseys which took parts of Ul Failghe (Offaly). At the time of the Anglo-Normans, Ul Failghe comprised parts of Laois and Kildare together with about a third of County Offaly, in the area of the baronies of Tinnehinch and Portnahinch, Upper and Lower Philipstown, Geashill, Coolestown, Warrenstown and parts of Kildare. One of the chiefs founded Mainistir Eimhin-Monasterevan.

The origin of Ua Diomasaigh comes from Diumusaigh, son of Corocan, son of Maolughra who in 1014 fought the Danes at Contarf. Flan, grandson of Diomasaigh, took the name, and was succeeded by his son Hugh.
