Web Notes notes for Athon DE COURTENAY
Stuart"s "Royalty for Commoners" (144:32). Sire de Courtenay in the Gatinais and of Chateau Renard; built the castle at Courtenay, 1010.

Maurice Houy's book, "Les Courtenay travers l'histoire": Hugh Capet's father had placed the important city of Sens under the control of several ambitious counts - Fromont I, Renard the Old, Fremont II, & Renard the Bad. These counts built fortresses - Montereau, at the confluence of the Seine into the Yonne, Joigny on the Yonne, and Chateaurenard on the Ouanne. One presumes that Athon, who was connected with Chateaurenard's Seigniory and founded in about the year 1000 the castle of Courtenay, was a descendant of Renard the Second. Athon formed an alliance with GEOFFREY FERROLES, count of the Gatinais and rendered him such services that this one gave him Chateaurenard, Charny and Champignelles. He lived till about 1060. His son married GEOFFREY's daughter.
