Web Notes notes for Máel Sechnaill Mor King Of Ireland
In 845 Turgesius with his Norwegians set fire to and destroyed the town, with the churches and other religious houses; but Maelseachlin (Malachy), King of Meath, having taken the tyrant, put a final end to his sacrilegious crimes by drowning him in Lough Ainin in Meath. Annals of the Four Masters.
347 Turgesius, a Norwegian king, came to Ireland with a large fleet. For a time Turgesius subjected the whole of Ireland to himself. He ruled the Irish king, Malachy. Each Irish chieftain was ruled by a Northman. The Northmen were Pagans, and hence religion and education were forbidden. The master of every house was obliged to pay yearly to Turgesius an ounce of gold, on penalty of losing his nose. Hence this tax was called the nose-tax. This oppression continued 13 years. Malachy succeeded in overthrowing the power of the Northmen, and having captured Turgesius he drowned him in a lake.
