Web Notes notes for Adam 'Cisógnach' DE CUSACK 3d Lord Of Killeen
On 15 Apr 1280 he granted Ledwychstown to his son, Nicholas, who in return had to give a pair of white gloves each Easter to the grantor or his heirs in lieu of all military service due, saving that due to the King himself. The expense account of Stephen de Fulbourne, King's Treasurer in Ireland, shows 'Paid to Adam de Cusack, for his robes at Christmas and Pentecost next ensuing by writ 3 marks.' He held the manor of Cullina in the parish of Kilmormoy, county Mayo, when in 1281 a dispute arose with the old rivals, the Barretts. A battle was fought which caused a sensation throughout Ireland for it is mentioned by nearly all the annals. The account given by the justiciary roll is the most detailed. It tells that a dispute arose between William Barrett and Adam Cusack, his neighbor, and a parley was held between them. One of the servants shot an arrow at the opposite party and both sides rushed together and many English on both sides were killed. Adam took William Barrett prisoner in his castle at Meelick and threw him in the dungeon, where he died. The battle took place at Moyne near the ancient church of Kilroe on the west side of Killala bay. The King of Ui Fiachrach Moy, O Dowd, supported Cusack during the battle.
