Web Notes notes for Robert FITZGODEBERT
Orpen in his 'Ireland under the Normans' describes the acquisition of land in Ireland by the Roches in these terms: "Fernegal, a district corresponding with the barony of Shelmaliere East, was granted by the Earl (Strongbow) to Maurice de prendergast for the service of ten knights, as an inducement to him to return to Ireland. Afterwards Robert Fitz Godebert was enfeoffed of this district, or a large portion of its southern estremity, by Maurice. He was probably a brother of Richard Fitz Godebert, the "Knight of Pembrokeshire" who accompanied Dermot on his return to Ireland in 1167, and son of Godebert, a Fleming of the hundreth of Rhos (House) near Haverford. His sons took the name of De la Roche from the castle there still known as Roch Castle.269

By the end of the 14th century at least 5 distinct families of Roches are to be found in Ireland, lords of lands in Louth, Kildare, Tipperary, Wexford and Cork. The David Roche mentioned in the Annals of the Four Masters and the Annals of Loch Ce as having murdered Cairbre O'Maclsechlainn in 1250, was a member of the Louth house. The Complete Peerage confuses the Louth family with that of Fermoy.269

1169 - Robert fitzGodebert de Roch, Richard's brother, and others in the extended family took part in the full scale invasion at Bannow Bay under the family overlord, Maurice de Pendergast, another member of the much transplanted Flemish tribes. Like his overlord, Robert would gain a large estate in south Wexford (after the fall of the town that year) for his trouble.

1170 - 72 de Rochs continued to participate actively in many aspects of the Cambro-Norman Invasion. By 1171, Strongbow, Earl of Pembroke, was in control of vast territories including Dublin, Waterford and Wexford and had granted tracts of land to his supporters.
