When Sancho VII King of Navarre died in 1234, Navarre fell to French domination when Sancho's nephew Thibaut, count of Champagne, inherited the throne. Navarrese Jewry under Thibaut did not suffer fiscal ruin or expulsion as did northern French Jews, but the community did feel the anti-Jewish attitudes and policies of the French sovereigns. Thibaut tolerated the Jews--unlike his contemporary Louis IX--yet in 1238 he did confiscate Jewish-owned property (and some property owned by non-Jews) to fund a military expedition to Palestine.248
