William fitz Osbern, steward to William the Conqueror; fought at Hastings, 1066; received large estates in England; made earl of Hereford shortly after 1066; killed at the battle of Cassel, Feb 1071.

Pages 104-105 of John Davies', "A History of Wales" credits him as the author of the destruction of the 700 year old Welsh kingdom of Gwent. As his son was imprisoned for treason in 1075, he had no successor as Earl of Hereford.
