He succeeded as Lord Strange of Knockin upon the death of his father in 1233-34. He was a Lord Marcher. He served in 1214 under King John in Poitou, and between 1233 and 1240 was successively appointed by King Henry III as constable of the castles of Montgomery, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, and Chester. He spent a long life in defending the Welsh border as a lord marcher, and during the rebellion of Simon de Montfort, he stood fast to the crown. He was Sheriff of Salop, or Shropshire, and Staffordshire, England, from 1236-1245. He was Justice of Chester in 1240.
