Web Notes notes for Owain Cyfeilioc AP GRUFFYDD Prince Of Powys
From the chart on pp. 82-83 of John Davies' "A History of Wales". On p.127, Davies writes, "In 1149 MADOG [Owain's uncle] had allowed his nephews, Owain and Meurig, to rule Cyfieliog as an appendage to the kingdom according to the custom of those times - never intending that the area should be separated from the kingdom of Powys. Owain Cyfeiliog was a poet of distinction and he had powerful friends in England, where he was respected for his wit. He succeeded in withholding Cyfeiliog from the senior line of the house of Powys. He added to it others of the commotes and cantrefi of Powys and, when he died in 1197, his son, Gwenwynwyn, inherited almost the whole of what would later be the county of Montgomery, a territory which became known as Powys Wenwynwyn."
