[Talking about Ireland around 1534] The MacMurroughs, nominal kings of Leinster, whose surname was Kavanagh, ruled a large area comprising most of County Carlow and the northern 2/3 of County Wexford, with some adjacent districts. For a century or so before 1525, they controlled Arklow, where there was a small trading port and borough. Within this large area, 'Low Leinster', as it was sometimes called, which included some of the most heavily forested country in Ireland, were many sub-lordships. Until well into the 16th century the MacMurroughs received substantial payments of 'black rent' both from the Dublin exchequer and from the liberty of Wexford.
