"Cospatrick (a.k.a. Gospatric) claimed the right to the Earldom of Northumberland through his Mother, AELGITHA/ELGIVA. After a nasty disagreement with WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR, he fled north to his cousin's Kingdom in Scotland taking with him Edgar Atheling (the Saxon heir), Edgar's mother and sisters, one of which was MARGARET, future Queen of MALCOLM III and later known as SAINT MARGARET OF SCOTLAND. It is in Scotland where he is most renowned as the First Earl and founder of the House of Dunbar. The House of Dunbar and its Clan, is one of the oldest in Scotland. It has existed for a thousand years, and God willing, will go on for another thousand."

     Gospatric, Earl of Northumberland was the son of Maldred, Lord of Allerdale and Ealdgyth (?). He was born circa 1040. He died circa 1075. He gained the title of Earl of Northumberland in 1067. He was deposed as Earl of Northumberland in 1072. He gained the title of Earl of Dunbar in 1072.
