About 1015 two illegitimate sons of Duke Richard I, Godfrey and William, became counts, the latter being count of Eu; and after their deaths, Gilbert of Brionne, the son of Godfrey, was a count, whilst William's son, Robert, was before 1047 recognized as count of Eu.
153 Per Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" (EU, p. 151-152), he was an illegitimate son of DUKE RICHARD, who gave him the countship of Heimois. He rebelled against his half brother, DUKE RICHARD II OF NORMANDY and was imprisoned at Rouen. He escaped, submitted to Richard, and was pardoned and made Count of Eu, of which office his nephew, GILBERT, COUNT OF BRIONNE, ancestor of the family of Clare, had been recently deprived.
