The legendary figure of the 11th century was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, better known as El Cid Campeador, representing the freelance lord warrior who fights in the service of Christian or Muslim kings. El Cid held temporarily the City of Valencia (1094-1099). His military feats inspired an anonymous author the first epic poem of Spanish literature, "El Cantar del Mio Cid (Poem of Mio Cid)" (1207).
