After the murder of William Longsword, Duke of Normandy, in 942, Normandy was given over to warfare between rival Viking bands, and during the early reign of Duke Richard I, the chief supporter of settled order appears to have been not the duke but the French king, Louis d'Outre-Mer, who in 942 overthrew the pagan Sihtric, and who in 945 suffered defeat at the hands of the Viking Harald.120
