Web Notes notes for Berengar II Of Ivrea King Of Italy
Burke called him Marquis d'Ivree and Roi d'Italie, also Margrave of Ivrea, count of Milan. deposed 963.

Weis' "Ancestral Roots . . ." (145:19), (146:18). Stuart's "Royalty For Commoners" (94:35) & (332:36). In 936, after a period of political confusion, Berenger, who had held the title of Count of Milan, succeeded his father as Marquis of Ivrea. This was at the whim of King Hugh. In 940, Hugh changed his policy towards the House of Ivrea and Berenger had to flee to the protection of the future emperor OTTO I in Germany. Hugh abolished the march of Ivrea. In 945 Berenger led a small German army across the Alps into Italy. Most of the Italian nobles abandoned Hugh and gave their support to Berenger. After Hugh died in 947 and Hugh's son and co-king, Lothar, died in 950, Berenger had himself crowned as king.
The kingly powers which Berenger inherited from Hugh were but a shadow of what they had been at the turn of the century. He was barely able to collect a tax to pay the Hungarians not to invade Italy. In 951-2, OTTO I, who by now had consolidated his power in Germany, came into Italy and proclaimed himself king. Berenger had to go to Germany to be recognised as king under OTTO's protection. In 961-2 OTTO finally annexed Italy and was crowned emperor.
