He died before his father, so he never inherited the Earldoms of Hereford & Essex. He was the only important marcher lord who fought with Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, at the Battle of Lewes, and was captured and imprisoned at Beeston castle in Cheshire, where he died.
