He became Count of Maine by his 1st marriage. He resigned Anjou & Maine to his eldest son, Geoffrey, and went off to the crusades. Here he married as his 2d wife, Melesende, Queen of Jerusalem, an even greater heiress, becoming King in her right, and dying at Acre in 1144.
