Web Notes notes for Alain* Fergant Duke Of Brittany
Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (39:25), (119:24), (132B:28). Per Galliou and Jones' "The Bretons", several sons of EUDES, Alain's father's uncle, had supported WILLIAM THE CONQUERER in his successful 1066 invasion of England. This resulted in the honour of Richmond in England being bestowed on the comital family and put them in a position to challenge the new Duke Alain for supremacy over Brittany. They were joined by Geoffrey Grenonat, an illigitimate son of ALAIN III, who had been given the county of Rennes for his lifetime. This state of disunity made the Bretons easy prey for their aggressive and more powerful neighbors. Brittany fell deeply under the control of the Normans. KING LOUIS VI OF FRANCE even recognized their suzerainty over Brittany at the Treaty of Gisors in 1113. Alain's two marriages are indicative of the ongoing power struggle for influence over Brittany by her neighbors. His first marriage was to Constance, daughter of the Norman WILLIAM THE CONQUERER. After her death, Alain married ERMENGARDE, the daughter of FULK RECHIN, COUNT OF TOURAINE. FULK was the brother of the Count of Anjou and father of the next count of Anjou. This marked a transition to more Angevin and less Norman influence over Breton affairs.
