Web Notes notes for Edmund 'Ironside' King Of England
From "Debrett's Kings and Queens of Britain" by David Williamson, ISBN 0-86350-101-X, p. 29:
On Ethelred's death, his eldest surviving son Edmund was chosen king by all the councillors who were in London and the citizens, and crowned at St Paul's Cathedral. From the start he had to contest the throne with Canute, son and heir of Sweyn, the Danish king who had wrested the English throne away from Edmund's father in 1013. After Canute had won the fiercely fought battle of Ashingdon, the two kings met at Alney in Gloucestershire and agreed to divide the kingdom, Edmund taking Wessex and Canute Mercia. Edmund, however, did not live long to enjoy his share for he died at Oxford on St Andrew's Day, 30 Nov 1016, and was buried with his grandfather King Edgar at Glastonbury. He had married in the summer of 1015 Ealdgith, widow of Sigeferth, son of Earngrim, an Anglo-Scandinavian thane, and left two infant sons, possibly twins, who were sent to far off Hungary for safe-keeping.
