In 1191 and during the years 1194-97 Williams's name is mentioned in the Pipe Rolls, while in 1198 Robert, son of William, was answering for his father's debts (Pipe Roll, 3 Ric. I, p 20; 6-9 Ric. I, passim; 10 Ric. I, p54).

Complete Peerage, vol XII/2 p. 437:
Son and heir [d] of William de Welle, farmed the Honor of Haughley, Suffolk, alias the Honor of the Constable, 1184-88. [e] He is mentioned often in the Pipe Rolls at the end of the 12th century as surety for the debts of Simon, Earl of Northampton; and he was also himself in debt to the Jews and assumed the burden of his father's debts to the Crown. He made grants to Greenfield Priory, to Bardney Abbey and to William Rufus called his kinsman; and he is mentioned in lawsuits, 1202-03. He married Maud. He died before Michaelmas 1206. His widow survived him.

1180 Robert de Welle (son of William, who was the son of Walter, who was the son of Ragemer tenant of Gilbert de Gant in Claxby St.Andrew, Withern and Well, Lincolnshire when the Domesday Book was compiled ), who farmed the the Honor of Haughley (alias Constable) 1184-88, Suffolk, is mentioned in Lincolnshire where his uncle Gilbert Gant is Earl of Lincoln.
