Web Notes notes for Owain AP BLEDDYN
Owain, eldest son of Bleddyn ap Tudur of Pengwern (1) by Annesta, daughter of Llywelyn ap Idnerth, must have died about the beginning of the 13th century, but nothing beyond the information contained in the various MS. pedigrees has been found concerning him. As, however, the office of seneschal to the Princes of Northern Powys would seem to have been hereditary in this family, it is probable that he preceded his son Iorwerth in this service; but there is no certainty. In several of the MS. pedigrees, the wife of Owain ap Bleddyn of Pengwern is said to have been Eva, daughter of Madog the Red, son of Gwenwynwyn, prince, or lord, of Upper Powys (who died in 1218), and relict of Iorwerth ap Owain Brogyntyn. If, however, Owain married Eva, it was as a second or third wife, and when he was advanced [page 12] in years. She was certainly not the mother of his son Iorwerth. On the other hand, Eva may have been the daughter of some other Madog Goch, afterwards wrongly identified by the 16th century genealogists. Owain had issue (2): Iorwerth, called Hên (the elder), Cynfrig Sais, Lluddoccaf, Rhys, Ririd, and Elin, wife of Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan.
(1) The assertions in The History of Powys Fadog, i., p. 312, and elsewhere, that this Owain was "Lord of Chirk, Nanheudwy and Maelor Isaf," are incorrect. owain and his descendants indeed held extensive possessions in these regions, and as uchelwyr and chieftains would be and were accorded by the Welsh the title of 'lord' but the actual lordships of Nanheudwy and Maelor Saesneg, and all adjacent territory rested, at this time, in the House of Northern Powys.
