Sir James Fitz Richard Barry, 4th Viscount Barry was the son of Richard Barry and Isabel Fitzgerald. He was born before 1558. He married Ellen Reagh, daughter of Cormac MacCarthy Reagh. He died on 10 April 1581.
      Sir James Fitz Richard Barry, 4th Viscount Barry also went by the nick-name of James Roe. He is said to have murdered his cousins Redmond and John, in order to secure the peerage. He is also said to have then done away with their brothers, Richard and David. He succeeded to the title of 4th Viscount Barry on 20 March 1557/58. He succeeded to the title of 17th Lord Barry on 20 March 1557/58. On 18 March 1560/61 he received by indenture from Edmond Barry of Rathgobbane (the rightful heir to the peerage) a surrender of the various estates to him and his heirs for ever. He was invested as a on 30 March 1567 at County Limerick, Ireland, by the Lord Deputy.3 On 5 April 1567 he received a Commission to execute martial law.
