Created Earl of Ormond 1328. Earl from 1328-38. James was knighted, 1326, and created, 1328, EARL OF ORMOND (semble: in the Peerage of Ireland and in tail male - see Butler Jo. Vol.1 No.4 p.246)

JAMES, 1st Earl of Ormonde, and 7th Butler, a minor at the decease of his father, but obtained license four years later, for the sum of 2,000 marks, to marry whomsoever he pleased; he accordingly m. 1327, Lady Eleanor de Bohun (who m. 2ndly, 1343, Thomas, Lord Dagworth, who was k. in Brittany 1359), 2nd dau. of Humphrey, Earl of Hereford and Essex, High Constable of England, by the Princess ELIZABETH PLANTAGENET, his wife, dau. of EDWARD I, and was created, in consequence of this alliance, by EDWARD III, 2 Nov. 1328, Earl of Ormonde. His Lordship had a renewed grant of the prisage of vines (which had been resumed by the crown), and a Grant of the regalities, liberties, &c., of co. Tipperary, with the right of a Palatine in that co. for life. He had issue.

He erected the castle at Thurles.45

James, second earl of Carrick, was given a new title. In the second year of the reign of Edward III, 1328, James Butler son of Edmund Butler married Eleanor de Bohun, a granddaughter of Edward I; she was the eldest daughter of the Earl of Hereford and of Elizabeth, the 7th daughter of Edward I. He was created Earl of Ormond by the king in a Parliament which was held at Northampton on Nov 2, 1328. The king also erected the County Tipperary into a palatinate in his favour, granting him the royal rights, franchises, military fiefs, and other privileges in that county.45

James, first Earl of Ormond, engaged on the side of his cousin, the Earl of Kildare, in his wars with the De Burghs and Le Poers. In 1329 and 1330 he was at war with the O'Nolans and the MacGeoghegans. In 1336 he founded the Friary of Carrickbeg, Co Waterford. This James left one son, James, who succeeded him, and one daughtger, Petronilla, married to Gilbert, Lord Talbot. His death took place on 6 Jan 1357, and he was buried at Gowran, Kilkenny, Ireland.45

In the year 1332 in the time of James 1st Earl of Ormond, the Irish destroyed the Castle of Bunratty, Co Clare, which had been built by the Earl de Clare in 1277; but soon after, the English defeated the O'Briens and McCarthys in Munster and took the Castle of Coolmore.45
