Web Notes notes for Sir David Mór DE BARRY
...to whom was granted, 24 Sep 1234, a weekly market and a yearly fair at his manor of Botavant [i.e. Buttevant, co Cork. See Carew papers, vol vi, p461.] In 1235 he enlarged the friary of Ballybeg. It was probably he who was styled Barrach Mor [the great Barry] by the Irish, and who was slain at the battle of Callan, in Desmond, in 1261.35

By his time, the Barrys had established manors at Buttevant and at Cararigtwohill, as in 1234 King Henry III granted a fair and market at Buttevant and a market at Carrigtwohill to David de Barry. Another stronghold built in this century was Castlelyons, known as Castrum Olethan or Caisleán Ó Liatháin -- the castle of Uí Liatháin. Yet another, one of the largest in Ireland, was sited at Liscarroll. It must have been in David Mór's era that the Barrys obtained lands in Connacht as a reward for their part in the conquest of that province. Although their period of tenure there was short they left their mark in the name Caisleán an Bharraigh (Castlebar). In 1235 David enlarged the revenues of Ballybeg Abby, about the same time as he was knighted. He must also have been the Barry who, according to the Annals of the Four Masters, founded a friary in Buttevant in 1251 and chose a burial place for his family in the choir, opposite the great altar. Ten years later he was buried there, being succeeded by his son David Óg.39
