He was Earl of Desmond from 1558, after his father died, until 1583, when he was attainted.

The Rebel Earl. The Complete Peerage vol.IV, pp.252-254. Killed by Daniel Kelly.

Gerald Fitzgerald, 15th Earl of Desmond
Irish Catholic nobleman, who (1579--80) rebelled against Queen Elizabeth I, sacked Youghal by night, and was proclaimed a traitor. He was eventually killed in a cabin in the Kerry mountains.

On 7 Sep 1565 Wild Piers Butler and his sons carried off 600 kine belonging to John McGrath, a Geraldine supporter; and on 4 May 1566 the Earl of Desmond complained to the Lord Deputy of the depredations committed by Piers Butler on O'Brien Ui Cuanach during his absence in the Pale.31

This James began by repudiating the daughter of Viscount Fermoy, by whom he had a son, Thomas Ruadh (red). The Earl then married the daughter of O'Carroll, by whom he had two sons, Gerald or Garrett, and John. His second wife having died, he married the daughter of M'Carty, who was mother to James. After the Earl's death a doubt existed regarding the legitimacy of the eldest son, Thomas Ruadh; and Garret, the son of Desmond by his second wife, the daughter of O'Carroll, was named Earl. 32

He was elected by his followers, on his father's death, to be Earl, according to the Irish custom. He was slain in rebellion; attainted, and all his great estates forfeited and divided among English settlers; it consisted of 600,000 acres.30
