He deposed his nephew, Thomas, as Earl of Desmond in 1411. He remained Earl until his death in 1463.
Having persecuted his nephew Thomas and compelled him to resign his Earldom, which he usurped and got settled on himself. By Earldom must be considered the Palatinate dignity, and castles, manors and lands. The dignity as a Peer of Parliament, was thought little of in those days, especially by the Earls of Desmond, who strived hard to be exempted from its duties, and obtained exemption from the Crown Aug 11, 1445. He was made Constable of Limerick Castle for life Aug 20, 1423.30
