The title of Knight of Kerry is of a very peculiar character, and, though not a regal honour, has been held as a prescriptive right from medieval times, and at various periods recognized by the Crown. The ancestor of this line of the Geraldines, John FitzThomas FitzGerald, Lord of Decies and Desmond, by virtue of his royal seignory as a Count Palatine, created three of his sons by his second marriage, hereditary knights, and thus originated the titles of the White Knight, the Knight of Glyn, and the Knight of Kerry.
From "Complete Peerage England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain" by George E Cokayne, CS421.G2 1982, vVII, p200: his father was Thomas FitzGErald, who died 1280, and his grandfather was Maurice FitzThomas FitzGerald who died before 1253, and his gr-grandfather was Thomas FitzMaurice FitzGerald, who married Sadbh.
