Web Notes notes for Jacob SCHAMP
Huguenots were French Calvinist Protestants. The St Bartholomew’s Day massacre, which began in the night of 23/24 August 1572 and lasted several weeks, was a group of assassinations and a wave of Catholic mob violence against the French Huguenots. The number of dead has been estimated from 5,000-30,000. The Des Champs family were Huguenots who fled France in 1573 to Belgium.
Jacob Schamp b. circa 1596, d. after May 1644 The name Schomp was probably spelled Des Champs which is of French origin, meaning "from the field or country." The family no doubt lived in the rural district of the "Department du Nord" of France for many centuries like many others but drawn by the attractions of the growing cities, the Schomps were ultimately encouraged to move to the prosperous city of Ghent, in Flanders. Upon their arrival in the Flemish city the family soon dropped their old surname of "Des Champs" it being too difficult for Dutch speaking Burgers to handle and eventually adopted the name which still stands: Schomp. The Schamp name is very closely connected with the ancient city of Ghent, once part of Flanders and now situated in northern Belgium. Here, the bearers of the name played an important role, as seen in one of the cities biggest hotels once called the Hotel Schamp. (Still standing today.) The best known of the family was Egide Schamp, who lived in Ghent during the late 18th century, and was many times the Assistant-Burgermeister of the town. He was once the owner of the Hotel Schamp, and had in it an enormous collection of paintings. It was in his hotel that Egide provided hospitality to the American representatives during the conferences between the United States and England in 1814.1 Jacob Schamp was born circa 1596 at Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium. He was probably a merchant, as had been members of his family for many generations, at Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium.
